Sugar Glider Info

Petaurus breviceps or "Sugar Glider" is classified as an exotic pet. They are intelligent, social, and very cute. They make incredible pets.

Like many animals from Australia, they are marsupials, a little smaller than our American flying squirrel, but much cuter. Sugar gliders have made their way to the United States in significant numbers, and are becoming a more & more popular pet.

If you are looking for a pocket pet. Make sure you find a reputable breeder & purchase quality supplies!

Sugar Gliders are indigenous to Australia, they are part of the marsupial family, which makes them related to opossums and Koala bears and like the Kangaroo, have a pouch were they carry up to 2 Joey's. The Joey's stay there for the first 8-9 weeks of their life!

The name sugar glider comes from their affinity for sweet things like the sweet sap from trees and fruits, and of coarse from their gliding membranes that extend from their wrists to their ankles! A unique feature is their ability to grab things like a monkey! They have hands very similar to ours! It's really cute!

They are omnivorous animals meaning they eat a variety of food. About 75% of their diet is actually made up of fresh fruit and vegetables. The other 25% is made up of protein & treats. In the wild they would get that protein from small insects and nuts.

The adult sugar glider has amazing agility and can use its gliding membranes & tails to glide up to 150 feet. Males can grow to a whopping 5 and 1/2 inches, while females can get up to 4 and 1/2 inches or more, and they both have tails that can exceed 6" in length at full growth.

Sugar Gliders in captivity can live up to 15 years given the proper diet and environment. Compared to in the wild with a life expectancy of 5-8 years as written in some sugar glider books. Gliders are nocturnal, meaning they are active and awake at night. They like to play quite a bit. So you prepare their cages like you would make a play area for a monkey! Add a pouch for nesting. Sugar gliders like things to swing on, climb on and crawl into. Your pet will love you for it ten fold!

They are very social animals and need to have companionship. If your thinking about adopting a Sugar Glider, please look for reputable, USDA Licensed breeders. Look for a company that carries the necessary supplies and cages so you can properly care for your new pets. Please do research about their diet. It is important to your new pet to be fed a proper diet.
